A Capital with a Flair for Music
More than a hundred thousand foreign visitors are interested in Hungarian music each year, and over 40,000 of them buy tickets for concerts in Budapest. Many people only realize when they come to Hungary that a piece of music they knew for a long time had been written by a Hungarian composer.
The greatest figures of Hungarian music include Ferenc Erkel, composer of the opera Hunyadi Laszlo, and Ferenc Liszt, whose Les Preludes or the 2nd Hungarian Rhapsody keep amazing listeners. The Hary Songs by Zoltan Kodaly truly deserve their worldwide reputation, as well as his many pieces inspired by folk music.
Bela Bartok was an exceptionally talented representative of Hungarian and universal music. The piano pieces he composed have become as popular in concert halls around the world as his operas The Wooden Prince, The Miraculous Mandarin and Bluebeard`s Castle.
